- 2 cups hot water
- 1/3 cup butter
- 1/4 teaspoon ground mustard
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1 1/4 cups milk
- 8 ounces American cheese, grated or cut into cubes

- You could add 1/4 cup minced onion to the macaroni when cooking for more flavor. Like garlic? Add a minced clove, too.

Here's how to make it:
- Put the elbow macaroni, hot water, butter and ground mustard into a 2-quart dish. Add salt and pepper, to taste. Stir, cover and microwave on high for 3 1/2 minutes. Stir, cover and cook on 50 percent power for 4 more minutes or until it boils.
- Whisk together the flour and milk until smooth. Stir the mixture into the macaroni. Stir in the cheese. Cover and cook on high for about 7 minutes or until the pasta is tender and sauce is hot and bubbly (stir twice during the cooking time).
