Recipe Notes

  • You could add 1/4 cup minced onion to the macaroni when cooking for more flavor. Like garlic? Add a minced clove, too.
  • When reheating leftovers, add a little bit of milk.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Put the elbow macaroni, hot water, butter and ground mustard into a 2-quart dish. Add salt and pepper, to taste. Stir, cover and microwave on high for 3 1/2 minutes. Stir, cover and cook on 50 percent power for 4 more minutes or until it boils.
  2. Whisk together the flour and milk until smooth. Stir the mixture into the macaroni. Stir in the cheese. Cover and cook on high for about 7 minutes or until the pasta is tender and sauce is hot and bubbly (stir twice during the cooking time).

Totally agree that the microwave can be used to make entire meals, you just have to get creative. I used it recently to steam broccoli and cauliflower and it saved me so much time. Great recipe here!
