Easy 10-Minute Brown Gravy Recipe (No Pan Drippings Needed) Sauces/Condiments Side Dishes Beef

Have you ever just wanted a plate of mashed potatoes with a rich brown gravy, but you don't want to cook meat to get the drippings to make a gravy? We feel you. But guess what? You can make a silky, rich, homemade brown gravy without meat drippings. And it's quick and easy.

This brown gravy recipe is made with chicken broth, beef broth, a beef bouillon cube, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, Kitchen Bouquet, water, cornstarch and butter. The ingredients simmer gently on the stovetop until it reaches your desired thickness. The longer it cooks, the richer and more intense the flavors are.

If you're not familiar with Kitchen Bouquet, it is a browning and seasoning sauce that adds a rich brown color to food. If you don't have it, that's OK. The gravy will still be delicious, just a little lighter in color.

Serve this rich brown gravy over mashed potatoes, beef, chicken-fried steak, as a topping for meatloaf or however you like to eat gravy.

Recipe Notes

  • If you don't have beef bouillon cubes, you could use a little Better Than Bouillon beef base.
  • Store the gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Whisk together the broths, beef bouillon cube, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce and Kitchen Bouquet in a saucepot.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the water and cornstarch to create a slurry.
  3. Bring the broth mixture to a boil and whisk in slurry. Reduce heat to low and cook until desired thickness. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Add the butter and whisk to combine.
