Baked Kentucky Hot Brown Sandwich Recipe Is From the 1920s Sandwiches Lunch Dinner

A hot brown sandwich is truly American. It was created at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, by Fred K. Schmidt in 1926. A variation on a Welsh rarebit, the open-faced sandwich is made with turkey, tomatoes, bacon and a cheese sauce.

These baked Kentucky hot brown sandwiches are perfect for lunch or with a salad for dinner. You could add some ham if you want to get creative and break tradition. Use whatever cheese you like best for the cheese sauce. It's your sandwich!

Ingredients

Cheese Sauce

• 4 tablespoons butter
• 1/4 cup flour
• 2 cups whole milk
• 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese)
• 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Sandwiches

• 4 slices toasted bread (sourdough works well)
• 8 slices deli turkey breast
• 8 slices tomato, dried on paper towels
• 8 slices crisp, cooked bacon

Here's how to make it: 

1. To make the cheese sauce, melt the butter in a saucepot. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 2 minutes. Whisk in the milk and cook over medium heat until thickened. Stir in the cheese and cook until cheese melts. Add Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper. 
2. To assemble the sandwiches. put the toasted bread on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Cover each piece of bread with two slices of turkey and tomato. Spoon the cheese sauce over the top. Add the bacon. Bake in a preheated 400-degree F oven for about 10 minutes.
