Crock Pot™ Spiced Apple Butter Recipe: A Budget-Friendly Fall Recipe Fruit Breakfast Budget-friendly

Homemade always tastes better, right? Also, with the cost of groceries it’s nice to save money by making homemade, too. You can make apple butter in your slow cooker for far less than it costs at the grocery store.

What is apple butter exactly? It’s a thick and creamy apple spread, similar to jam or jelly. It’s thicker than applesauce but has a spreadable consistency like butter.

This apple butter recipe makes enough for you to freeze some or even give some as gifts. Enjoy this delicious spread on toast, biscuits, waffles or croissants. Stir it into oatmeal, top your pancakes with it or brush it on chicken or pork during the last few minutes of cooking.

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 5 hours
Total Time: 5 hours and 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 5 pounds apples (I recommend Fuji, Golden Delicious, McIntosh or Gala), peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 dashes salt

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Add apples slices to the slow cooker. Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt. Stir to combine. Cover and cook on high for 5 hours or low for 8 to 10 hours.
  2. After the apples have cooked, place them into a blender along with any liquid that the apples produced in the slow cooker. Cover blender with the lid and place a towel on top of the lid (for safety, to prevent burns in case the lid comes off). Hold the lid on and pulse for about a minute or until apple butter is smooth.
