The secret to caramelizing onions in the oven is to add olive oil and water, which helps them steam and soften. You still have to stir, but without direct heat, there's less chance that they'll burn. Caramelized onions can be used on burgers, pizza, in dips, as a steak topping, on baked potatoes, toast and meatloaf, and on sandwiches.

- 2 - 3 large onions, sliced (red, white or yellow)
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 2 tablespoons water
Here's how to make it:
- Put the sliced onions onto a baking sheet that's been lined with parchment paper. Don't skip the parchment paper. You'll be thankful when it is time for cleanup!
- Add the olive oil and water. Season with salt and pepper. Toss to coat. You may need more or less olive oil and water.
- Bake in a preheated 400-degree F oven until golden brown, about 45 minutes. Stir every 10 minutes. Store the cooled onions in an airtight container in the fridge.
