Grandma's 4-Ingredient Creamy Caramel Frosting Recipe: An Old-fashioned Favorite Cakes/Cupcakes Desserts

Sunday was the day you could find most of my family at my grandma's house. Knowing that someone was sure to show up to see her and my grandpa, she always had a pie or cake sitting on the stove. Lucky us!

If it was a cake, you can bet she would start singing If I Knew You Were Coming I'd Have Baked a Cake, which my kids do now when I bake a cake. This is her creamy caramel cake frosting recipe she would slather over a vanilla cake. You can use this sweet caramel frosting on not only cakes, but cupcakes or dip vanilla wafers or sugar cookies into it.

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 12 minutes
Cook Time: 2 minutes
Total Time: 14 minutes

Servings: Frosts 1 cake

Ingredients

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Here's how to make it:

  1. Heat the brown sugar, butter and milk in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat.
  2. Cool until slightly thickened, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes.
  3. Gradually start adding the powdered sugar. Add a little water, if necessary, to make it a spreadable consistency.
