Tacos, tacos, tacos! Tacos are one of my all-time favorites things to eat. One way to add some spice and more flavor to taco night is by making a sauce to drizzle over those tacos, whether they're crispy tacos or soft tacos. This fresh jalapeno crema recipe is my new favorite taco sauce. You may find yourself eating this creamy Tex-Mex sauce right off the spoon!
You only need six simple ingredients to make this creamy Mexican jalapeno crema sauce recipe. Here is what you need to grab from your fridge and pantry: fresh jalapenos (check out the health benefits of jalapenos), fresh cilantro (read about the health benefits of cilantro), sour cream, onion powder, fresh garlic and limes for juicing. If you want to add a touch of sweetness, grab some honey. The simple ingredients are whirled in a blender or food processor until smooth. Done. (It's OK to lick the spoon now.)
Variation: Make roasted jalapeno crema by roasting the jalapenos over a gas burner, in a cast iron skillet or under the broiler. Roasting calms the heat and mellows the flavor of the peppers. You could also roast one jalapeno and put the other jalapeno in unroasted. (For us overthinkers.)
Drizzle this creamy jalapeno cilantro lime sauce over tacos, burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas, flautas, Mexican casseroles, tostadas or whatever Mexican food is your favorite. The jalapeno crema is also delicious as a dip with tortilla chips, spooned over chicken breast, grilled fish or shrimp, or as a salad dressing. I doused my crispy ground beef tacos with the sauce and could not stop eating it. The leftover crema is going to find its way into another recipe, so stay tuned.
Cuisine: Mexican / Tex-Mex
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 12
Ingredients
- 2 jalapenos, seeds and ribs removed for less heat
- 1 cup cilantro (I used one small bunch, including stems)
- 2/3 cup sour cream
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- 1 teaspoon honey (optional)
Here’s how to make it:
- Put all the ingredients into a food processor or blender. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Pulse until smooth. Taste and add more salt and pepper, if needed. (You could also add more of any ingredient to get it where it's perfect for you.)
- Pour into an airtight container. (The flavors meld when they sit longer, so if you have time make this sauce ahead of time.)
- Serve as desired. Store the crema in an airtight container in the fridge. This recipe can easily be cut in half.
