Pork butts are an inexpensive cut of meat that can be cooked so many different ways. The pork roast is also very forgiving due to the marbling of fat throughout, so it almost always comes out tender and juicy. One of my favorite Asian sauces is char sui sauce (aka char siu, which is the westernized spelling), so I had no doubt this easy char sui pork butt slow cooker recipe would be delicious. This sweet and savory high-protein recipe will be on repeat at my house!
You only need nine simple ingredients to make this Asian-inspired pork recipe for your family. Here is your short shopping list: a pork butt (about 2 to 3 pounds), low-sodium soy sauce, hoisin sauce, ketchup, honey, fresh garlic, fresh ginger, sesame oil and five spice powder. Check out the health benefits of pork, the health benefits of ginger and the health benefits of protein.
Cooking Note: My pork butt was over 6 pounds, so I cut it in half and cooked the other side a different night. You can use bone-in pork butt or boneless pork butt for this recipe.
All the sauce ingredients are mixed together and simply poured over the pork butt in the slow cooker. Cover and cook until the pork is fall-apart tender, about eight hours (though slow cookers do vary). Pork is cooked through at 145 degrees F on a food thermometer. After the pork butt is cooked, you can cut it into chunks or shred it with two forks to use however you like.
The tender pieces of pork butt and sauce are delicious served over a grain like rice or quinoa, piled on Asian noodles or rolled up in a tortilla for a Asian taco for a high-protein dinner. I served mine over quinoa with some crispy spring rolls and a fresh vegetable.
Cuisine: Asian / American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 8 hours (slow cookers vary)
Total Time: 8 hours and 5 minutes
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 2 - 3 pounds pork butt
- 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 3 tablespoons ketchup
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 3 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
- 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, grated (I used 2 frozen ginger cubes)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon five spice powder
Here's how to make it:
- Put the pork butt into the slow cooker. Season with salt and black pepper, if desired. (I seasoned with black pepper but no additional salt.)
- Stir together all the sauce ingredients.
- Pour the sauce over the pork butt.
- Cover the slow cooker.
- Cook on low heat for about 8 hours, or until pork is cooked through and fall-apart tender. (Toward the end of cooking, I basted every now and then with the sauce.)
- Cut into chunks, slices or shred with two forks.
- Serve as desired. Store the pork and sauce in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat in the microwave or use in recipes as desired.
