My new air fryer is the queen of my kitchen right now. New air fryer recipes are dominating my dinners – and not one has disappointed. This whole chicken cooked in the air fryer is my latest discovery, and one that will be on dinner repeat. The air fryer chicken recipe was so simple to prep and it cooked up moist and juicy with the crispy skin we crave.
This high-protein, budget recipe only requires a handful of ingredients. Here is your gluten-free shopping list for this easy dinner recipe: a whole chicken (read about the health benefits of chicken), butter (you could substitute olive oil), smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and parsley flakes. The chicken is seasoned inside and out, then cooked for under an hour in the air fryer.
Variation: You could change up the spices in this air fryer roasted chicken recipe. Use whatever spices you like. A few to consider that would be delicious are ground turmeric, Italian seasoning, Greek seasoning, Mediterranean seasoning, herbes de provence and rotisserie seasoning.
Carve the high-protein chicken (check out the health benefits of protein) and serve for dinner with your favorite side dishes. This is also a good meal-prep recipe. Cook the chicken then shred it for salads, casseroles, fried rice, chicken salad or whatever you use cooked shredded chicken for.

Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken (3 to 4 pounds)
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika, plus more for outside of bird
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, plus more for outside of bird
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder, plus more for outside of bird
- 1/4 teaspoon parsley flakes, plus more for outside of bird
Here's how to make it:
- Put the butter into a small bowl. Add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and parsley flakes. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Use a fork to mash and combine well. (If you don't like using butter, drizzle the inside and outside of the chicken with olive oil instead.)
- Use your fingers to carefully lift the skin from the meat. Rub the butter under the skin and all over the chicken. Sprinkle the whole chicken with more smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, parsley flakes and salt and black pepper. Put the chicken into the air fryer basket. (I used an air fryer liner on the bottom of the basket. If you're using a meat thermometer, insert it into the thickest part of the breast. I seasoned liberally with the spices, but season to your taste.)
- Air fry the chicken at 350 degrees F for 25 minutes.
- Flip the chicken over. (I use tongs to do this.)
- Continue to cook 25 to 30 minutes more, or until the internal temperature is 165 degrees F. (You can pull the chicken a few degrees before 165 because it will rise a bit more after you take it out of the air fryer.)
- Remove the chicken to a cutting board and let it rest for about 5 to 10 minutes.
- Carve the chicken and serve. Store any leftover chicken in an airtight container in the fridge.
