Sour cream, onion and me go way back. Sour cream and onion is one of my favorite dips. My grandma always had a bowl of the creamy dip on the table at any holiday gathering. But what about sour cream and onion potato chips? Talk about childhood memories. And right now my favorite chicken wing at a local restaurant is their crispy sour cream and onion wings. Oh, my. So it was no surprised that when I recipe for sour cream and onion salad dressing from NYT Cooking came through my news feed, it was on my salad that night.
This creamy homemade salad dressing has all the flavors of sour cream and onion you crave. The dressing has just a few simple ingredients and whisks together in minutes. Here is your short gluten-free shopping list for this salad dressing recipe: sour cream, red wine vinegar, onion powder, honey, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce (check the label if you're on a gluten-free diet), fresh garlic and fresh chives. (Check out the health benefits of chives.)
The NYT Cooking recipe gave ingredients for the salad, but not me. Salads are personal, and depend on your tastes and, if you're like me, what you have in the fridge. I drizzled this cream sour cream-based salad dressing on shredded romaine lettuce, chopped broccoli, microgreens with more fresh chives on top. So delicious!

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar (or sherry vinegar)
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 2 teaspoons honey
- 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (or gluten-free Worcestershire sauce)
- 1 garlic clove, grated or minced
- 1/4 cup chives, finely chopped
Here's how to make it:
- Put the sour cream, vinegar, onion powder, honey, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce and garlic into a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. (I used a 2-cup glass measuring cup. Instead of honey, you could use agave nectar.)
- Whisk to combine.
- Add the chives. (If you don't have fresh chives, you could use dried chives or minced green onions tops.)
- Whisk to combine.
- Use immediately or pour into an airtight container, salad dressing cruet or mason jar.
- Drizzle over salad greens and enjoy. This recipe can easily be doubled and can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge.
