Roasted garlic mashed potatoes are kind of hard to resist. If you want the flavor of roasted garlic mashed potatoes but don't want to bother with actually roasting a head of garlic in the oven, here is a shortcut recipe for you! These creamy mashed potatoes are loaded with roasted garlic flavor and are on the table in about 15 minutes.
The secret to this mashed potato recipe is roasted garlic powder. Just like garlic powder but with more flavor, this spice gives you the taste you crave with just a shake of the wrist. To make these garlicy mashed potatoes you will need just four simple ingredients and your salt and pepper shakers. Here is your short shopping list: fresh potatoes (I used red potatoes), roasted garlic powder, milk or choice (heavy cream, milk, evaporated milk, half and half or even nut milk) and butter.
Serve these buttery mashed potatoes as a dinner side dish with chicken, turkey, beef, pork, lamb, venison or seafood.

Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 4 - 5 large red potatoes (about 1 pound)
- 1/2 - 1 teaspoon roasted garlic powder (to taste)
- 1/4 - 1/3 cup heavy cream, milk, evaporated milk or half and half
- 4 tablespoons butter, plus more for serving
Recipe Notes
- You could make this recipe with Yukon gold, white or russet potatoes.
- If you don't have roasted garlic powder, you can use regular garlic powder.
- For extra flavor, sprinkle in some onion powder.
- Add as much milk as needed to create desired creaminess.
- Heavy cream will result in the richest, creamiest potatoes, but you can use evaporated milk, regular milk, half and half or even plant-based milk.
- Store the potatoes in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat in the microwave.
Here's hot to make it:
- Cook the potatoes in boiling, salted water until tender, about 8 to 10 minutes.
- Drain and return to the pot. You can cook them a minute or two, if desired, over low heat to help evaporate any remaining water, but this is optional.
- Add the roasted garlic powder, salt and black pepper, to taste. Stir to combine.
- Add the butter and stir until melted. Taste and adjust seasonings.
- Spoon into a serving bowl and top with more butter, if desired.
