Adding a sweet and creamy vanilla icing can level-up just about any dessert – from cakes and pies to cinnamon rolls, muffins and more. This easy vanilla icing recipe is made with just three ingredients and is ready to spread on your favorite dessert in just about three minutes!
To make this gluten-free icing recipe, you need only three simple ingredients: powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract. That's it! The pinch of salt is optional. You simply whisk together the ingredients then spread the creamy icing on whatever you like.
We suggest whipping up a batch of cookies or cupcakes just so you have an excuse to make this quick and delicious frosting recipe. I recently served it with a homemade banana cake and it made it even better!

Ingredients
- 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
- 2 tablespoons whole milk, half and half or heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- pinch of salt (optional)

- Measure out the cup of powdered sugar before you sift it.
- You can use whole milk, half and half or heavy cream, depending on the consistency you like.
- This recipe generally makes enough icing for a single cake or a dozen cookies or cupcakes, etc.
- Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Here’s how to make it:
- Sift the powdered sugar into a medium mixing bowl.
- Add the milk and vanilla extract. Add the salt, if using.
- Whisk until well-blended. To get the consistency you want, add a bit more milk (for a thinner consistency) or a bit more powdered sugar (for a thicker consistency).
- Spread over your favorite baked goods. If not using immediately, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use.
