30-Minute Wonton Soup Recipe Tastes Like It Came From an Asian Restaurant by Donna John

When you get Chinese takeout, you've got to get a steaming bowl of wonton soup with your order. It's a must. The iconic Asian soup, filled with pork-stuffed dumplings, is comforting in a simple, tasty way. Until I stumbled on a quick 30-minute recipe for wonton soup, I never considered making it homemade. This easy wonton soup recipe is simple to prepare and tastes amazing with a side of egg rolls for dinner.

To make this Asian-inspired soup recipe you will need a short list of ingredients you probably already have in your fridge and pantry. Here is what you need to grab: ground pork, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, fresh ginger (see Recipe Notes), brown sugar, green onions, wonton wrappers, chicken broth and fresh garlic.

No, you don't have to be a professional dumpling maker to cook this soup. Trust me, my dumplings looked nothing like the ones that come in my wonton soup from our local Chinese joint, but they tasted delicious. So who cares? 

Serve a bowl of this hot wonton soup as a starter with your Asian dinner, or like I did as the main dish with a side of crispy egg rolls.

Ingredients

Wontons

• 8 ounces ground pork
• 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
• 1 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce
• 1 teaspoon sesame oil
• 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, grated
• 1 teaspoon brown sugar
• 2 green onions, minced
• 20 wonton wrappers (approximately) 

Soup

• 6 cups chicken broth
• 3 cloves garlic, minced
• 2 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce
• 1 teaspoon sesame oil
• 3 green onions, chopped

Recipe Notes

• Be sure to use wonton wrappers, not egg roll wrappers.
  

• The amount of wontons you get will depend on how much filling you use in each.

• I used Dorot Gardens frozen ginger cubes.

• To reduce the sodium in this recipe, you can use low-sodium soy sauce and lower-sodium chicken broth. 

• Use good-quality chicken broth for this recipe. It makes a difference. 

Here's how to make it:

1. To make the wontons, stir together all the ingredients except the wonton wrappers in a mixing bowl. Season with black pepper and salt, if desired. Mix well.
   
2. Place some of the filing onto a wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges with a little water.
   
3. Fold up to make a triangle.
   
4. Fold the top down.
   
5. Fold the sides into the middle. Press firmly to seal, using water to moisten. Continue with the rest of the wontons until you use all the filling.
   
6. Set the filled wontons aside while you make the soup. Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
   
7. In a soup pot, add the chicken broth, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil and green onions. Bring to a gentle simmer.
   
8. Boil the wontons for about 5 minutes.
   
9. Put the cooked wontons into the soup. Taste and add more seasonings, if needed.
   
10. Serve with more chopped green onions, if desired.
