To make this citrusy dessert bars recipe, you will need six simple ingredients: unsalted butter, granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, eggs, and lemons and limes for juicing and zesting.
Cooking Tip: Fresh is best when it comes to citrus juices. So if you can, squeeze your own. For this recipe, you need the zest, anyway! In a pinch, you could use bottled lemon and lime juice.

Ingredients
Crust
- 1/2 pound (1 cup) unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
Lemon Lime Filling
- 5 large eggs
- 2 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon zest
- 1 tablespoon lime zest
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 1/2 cup lime juice
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
Here's how to make it:
- Cream the sugar and butter together in a large bowl. Mix in the flour until it becomes a soft dough. (For a gluten-free dessert, use gluten-free flour.)
- Spray a 13x9-inch glass baking dish with nonstick spray and press the dough into the pan. Bake the crust in a preheated 350-degree F oven for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven.
- For the filling, stir the sugar and eggs together in a large bowl. Stir in the flour, zest, and lemon and lime juice and mix well. Pour on top of the baked crust. Bake until its set, about 35 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and allow it to cool. Sprinkle powdered sugar over the cooled lemon lime bars. Cut into 12 squares and serve. Store the bars in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
