Americans love their comfort food. According to a study, Americans are three times more likely to pick comfort food over gourmet meals to eat the rest of their lives. Topping that list in No. 2 position is mozzarella sticks. We get it. There's nothing quite like that a long string pull after biting into a hot, ooey gooey fried cheese stick.
We have another take on fried cheese: fried cheese balls. Why not? They are simply fried mozzarella sticks in bite-sized form. To make these cheesy fried mozzarella cheese balls you will need mozzarella cheese sticks, eggs, milk, flour, dried Italian breadcrumbs and vegetable oil, for frying. The cheese sticks are cut into bite-sized pieces, go through the dredging station and are quickly pan-fried until golden brown, crisp and melted.
Serve these fried mozzarella cheese balls as an appetizer or snack with marinara sauce, ranch dressing or your favorite dipping sauce, add them to your salads or serve them as a fun side dish for dinner.

Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 50
Ingredients
- 10 mozzarella string cheese sticks, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 cup dry Italian breadcrumbs
- 1 cup flour
- vegetable oil, for frying
Recipe Notes
- Do not overcrowd the pan when frying the cheese balls. Not only will you not get the crispiest cheese balls, but they could stick together.
- You could use cheddar cheese sticks instead of mozzarella for a change.
- Try different flavors of breadcrumbs like garlic and herb or use plain and add your own seasonings.
- Store any leftover cheese balls in an airtight container in the fridge.
Here's how to make it:
- Whisk together the eggs and milk in a mixing bowl. Put the flour into a second mixing bowl and the breadcrumbs into a third bowl.
- Dip each piece of mozzarella into the flour, then into the egg and finish with the breadcrumbs. Set them onto a piece of parchment paper. Repeat until all the cheese has been coated.
- Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet to 350 degrees F. Cook the cheese in batches (do not overcrowd the pan) until golden brown on both sides, about 30 seconds per side. Remove to a paper towel. Repeat with remaining cheese. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.
