  1. Beat the sugar and shortening together in a bowl. Add the molasses and boiling water. Stir to combine.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. Add this mixture to the wet ingredients. Beat well. Add the eggs and beat again. Fold in the walnuts, if using.
