Some may be surprised that tartar sauce is served with fish and chips and not just malt vinegar. Tartar sauce is enjoyed on fish and chips in British pubs and restaurants, though it's less common in "chip shops" (aka chippies), where malt vinegar reigns supreme.
This British tartar sauce is similar to what we enjoy in the U.S. The main difference is the addition of creme fraiche. Creme fraiche is rich, thick and made with heavy cream, and is similar to sour cream.
Here is your shopping list for this easy gluten-free tartar sauce recipe: mayonnaise, creme fraiche (or sour cream), shallots, capers, cornichons (or your favorite pickles), fresh parsley, fresh chives and lemons for juicing. Read about the health benefits of capers, the health benefits of shallots and learn more about creme fraiche.
Serve the creamy tartar sauce with fried fish or whatever fried seafood you enjoy. The mayonnaise-based sauce is also delicious as a dipping sauce for french fries or even a sandwich spread. Try it on a fish sandwich!
