Many breastfeeding moms think they have to avoid fish altogether while they are nursing. This is a myth. There are some fish that contain high levels of mercury, such as:

  • shark
  • swordfish
  • king mackerel 
  • tilefish 

So it’s best to stay away from them while breastfeeding. However, fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, can actually be beneficial to your baby’s brain and eye development. Breastfeeding moms can eat up to 12 ounces a week of fish and shellfish with lower levels of mercury.
