Q. I read in your article Expert Q&A: Pregnancy Diet Questions: 5 Ways to Eat Healthy for Your New Year Pregnancy that pregnant women should not eat low-fat ice cream. Why?

A. I do not believe in low-fat anything. First of all, our body needs fat, and pregnant women need to eat the three food groups fat, protein and carbohydrates together at meals. Full-fat ice cream is an ideal combination of the three. However, plain vanilla would be better than a flavor comprised mainly of caramel, hot fudge or cookie dough. Always read the labels. Avoid high fructose syrup. Hershey's chocolate syrup, for example, doesn't have any real chocolate in it.
