Childbirth, Pregnancy, Labor & Delivery Terms: Stripping Membranes Labor and Delivery

Stripping membranes is when your doctor separates the amniotic sac from the uterine wall. Your doctor will use his or her finger to gently perform the procedure. The finger is inserted into the cervix and moved in a circular motion. Stripping the membranes can trigger your contractions and get labor started. The procedure can be uncomfortable for some women.
