I’m not going to lie, being a speech-language pathologist (SLP) has its advantages when it comes to writing children’s books. Based on our vast training and experience, SLPs have an in-depth understanding of speech and language acquisition and development, enabling us to craft stories that are developmentally appropriate and tailored to enhance children's vocabulary, grammar, speech sound production and overall language skills.

It’s no surprise that reading to children is a fundamental and essential component of early language development. Research indicates that children's books with rich and varied language exposure can significantly enhance vocabulary development and language processing skills. Books that emphasize rhymes, alliteration and sound patterns are particularly effective in fostering these skills. It’s well-known that SLPs play a critical role in reading development and bring a unique set of skills and insights to enhance children’s literacy skills. In light of this research, who better to author children’s books than SLPs.

My SLP-Author colleagues and I are uniquely qualified to write children's books that are not only enjoyable but also combine storytelling with educational and therapeutic strategies that promote language development and communication skills. When I wrote my first book, Kodi’s Adventures: How I Learned to Defeat the Time Snatcher, my professional training, neurodiversity-affirming practice and extensive experience working with children, guided me to integrate the whole child into my storytelling. SLPs are trained to be culturally competent, allowing us to write inclusive stories that resonate with diverse audiences and address language variation. By integrating our clinical practice into storytelling, SLP-authored books can serve dual purposes, providing both entertainment and targeted speech and language practice for all children.
