Conscious Discipline: Discipline Doesn’t Have to Be Harsh, But It Needs to Be Deliberate Kids Parenting

Most parents think about how they discipline their child many times each year, month and maybe every week (or day!). Some question if they are being too harsh. Others wonder if their approach to discipline is enough. 

Oftentimes, the questions arise when negative behaviors don’t seem to dissipate. First off, discipline does not have to be harsh. It doesn’t have to hurt. However, it does need to be consistent and deliberate. What we mean by this is you have to have a specific reason for the discipline you’re choosing. 

For example, if your child accidentally spilled his juice on the table because he was goofing around or not paying attention after you directed him to be more careful, does that warrant being sent to his room and grounded for two weeks? That depends, but most people would say no. However, does that child need some type of discipline? Perhaps. And, when you do need to discipline, the goal should be to help the child feel loved and valued. That is conscious discipline.
