The Joy of Scrap Gardening: How to Regrow Green Onions At Home All Year Gardening Activities Home
How would you like to never have to buy green onions again and have something pretty in your kitchen or on your patio? Green onions can be regrown over and over again either outside in a garden or in a planter inside or outside. Scrap gardening, especially regrowing green onions, is super (super!) easy. I cook with green onions all the time, so this saves me from spending even more money at the grocery store.
Here's how to make the miracle of re-growing green onions happen:
- When cooking with green onions, cut the ends off, making sure not to remove the roots.
- Push the root end down into the soil, leaving the top exposed.
- Water the green onions often, and continue to add new cuttings where there's space in the container.
- Grown the green onions in a bright location in your house or outside.
The onions grow really fast– you will notice growth almost every day. When the green onions are at your desired length, simply pull them up, wash them off and cook with them. Be sure to save the root so you can start all over again.

Have you ever tried just cutting some of the tops off, if you just need a small amount? I'd be interested to know if it could be done. Thanks so much for this!
