Unforgettable Destinations in Italy: 4 Charming Italian Towns to Help Cure Your COVID Travel Blues International
As the 2021 travel season begins to take shape, I think it is worth incorporating some of what we have learned during coronavirus lockdowns and quarantines. People and experiences matter – they are what most of us found we missed the most. Now as we find ways to travel again, here are some great places to visit in Tuscany that are authentic, beautiful and unforgettable:
1. Bolsena
Hidden on the border of Tuscany and Umbria, this beautiful medieval town sits atop a stunning, peaceful lake. It is the perfect place to experience amazing food, ancient Italian architecture, a beachy summer atmosphere and a reprieve from the larger cities of Rome or Florence. The centro storico (historic center) of Bolsena is still as it was hundreds of years ago, complete with cobblestone walkways, a medieval fortress and ominous alleyways with iron sconces and massive medieval doors. Making the way from the top of Bolsena to the lake front restaurants and bars the locals still greet visitors from their doorways as they have for centuries.
2. Pitiliagno
Rising up from the lava hill below, the ancient city of Pitiliagno mesmerizes you as you approach. The lush surroundings give way to a series of ancient caves on which houses were later built. The Etruscan architecture, combined with the ancient caves offer a glimpse of Italy’s past as well as its true nature of quaint villages, history and stunning landscapes.
3. Civita di Bagnoregio
If an ancient city balanced atop an eroding lava rock hill sounds appealing then there is no more beautiful city than Civita di Bagnoregio. The town of seven inhabitants offers the most stunning views, but none as jaw dropping as the dramatic entrance across the bridge that leads to the opening gate. Its stunning stone buildings adorned with overflowing flower boxes, and filled with quaint restaurants transport you from reality and into what is the picturesque Italian village you can imagine. The mayor has imposed a 5-euro fee to enter “the disappearing village” to help maintain the village as it slowly erodes.
4. Pienza
In the midst of the rolling hills of the Val d’Orcia, the village of Pienza quietly sits as tourists flock to many of the other surrounding towns. Pienza, however, should not be overlooked. The stunning views, incredible restaurants, fantastic architecture and quaint shops all offer a true Italian experience. Sipping wine on the terrace of a restaurant while taking in one of the most beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Sites will quickly ease the trauma of quarantines and lockdowns.
