Teaching your toddler to be independent can be fun and beneficial for all. While it frees up time as your toddler becomes more capable of doing things on his or her own, the value to the child is much greater. A child gains confidence, a sense of pride and learns new skills when doing things on her own. Here are ideas to start with toddlers as young as 2:
- Set up a snack area in a cabinet with a few bowls, cups, plates and snacks for your child. Teach him how to get the dishes and snacks himself after asking permission.
- Assign your child small chores like setting napkins on the table at mealtime.
- Have her take her tableware to the counter when a meal is finished.
- Buy loose elastic pants so he is able to pull them up and down as he becomes potty trained.
- Provide designated storage to put away toys, shoes, etc., so he can be responsible for cleaning up for himself.
- Buy toddler-sized cooking utensils so she can help in the kitchen.
Teaching independence takes a little time and effort in the beginning, but the joy you will both have succeeding at these important milestones is worth it.
