Teaching Time to Kids: How to Encourage Time & Sequencing Skills With a Calendar! Activities Parenting

Many children struggle with grasping the concept of time because it’s so abstract.  A calendar is a great visual tool to help children learn about time and sequencing concepts such as: before, after, first, last, next, month, day, year, week, yesterday, today, tomorrow and until. You can ask and answer the following questions using a calendar as your guide:   

• How many days “until” vacation?   
• What day comes “before” Tuesday? 
• What month comes “after” March? 
• What is the "last" day of the month? 
• Today is Friday. What day was it “yesterday?"  
• What day will “tomorrow” be? 
• Today is the “first” day of the month. 
• What did we do “yesterday” at the beach?       
• You can also point out something that happened “last week” or "two weeks ago” while pointing to that row on the calendar. 
• Use pictures that you have taken from past events and paste them on your calendar as a visual reference.

You get the idea.  It’s a concrete way of helping kids “see” the passage of time.
