Letting your children make decisions for themselves whenever possible boosts their self-esteem. And it may make them more likely to cooperate in situations when they don't have a choice. For example:
- They have to eat their vegetables, but you can let them select which vegetable you make for dinner.
- They have to get dressed, but you can let them pick out which shirt they want to wear.
