The demands placed on kindergarteners are very different today than when we went to school. Kids need to enter kindergarten ready to read. Help them by:
- Reading to them daily.
- Play word games to build their phonological awareness skills.
- Play rhyming games like, “Do these word rhyme?” or “What rhymes with…?”
- Clap out syllables in words like, “hel-i-cop-ter."
- Stretch out sounds in words, “What word is this, c-a-t.”
These foundation skills are prerequisites to literacy. There is a lot of information online about the importance of these skills, as well as activities to play with your child!
