Kathy Shimmield Discusses Her Adult Coloring Book, "A Day in the Life of Mom!" by Donna John

Are you stressed? Anxious? Just plain bored? Kathy Shimmield has a creative solution for you, Mom! Kathy has produced an adult coloring book – just for moms! A Day In the Life of Mom is a homage to the life of mothers in the guise of an adult coloring/meditative book. You can take a stroll through the existence of the average mom with these detailed, factual yet funny illustrations. We chatted with Kathy recently and learned more about this must-have stress-reliever for moms!

Q: What gave you the idea for this adult coloring book for moms?
I kept seeing coloring books for adults but I found none of them very different from the others. I thought about how to make it a great way for moms to relax and have a good laugh. What’s more relaxing than that?! I decided to go over what a mom experiences day to day and make it into an adult coloring book.

Q: The pictures have great detail. How did you find an illustrator?
I went onto Upwork, a site where you interview and hire professionals of all kinds. I posted what I was looking for an interviewed a few people and reviewed their work until I found a good match.

Q: What has been the most difficult task so far?
It’s been the marketing. It’s so new to me, but so many great people have reached out to help me. Some Facebook friends have been incredibly generous and supportive. I find word-of-mouth marketing really helpful, so I appreciate anyone who shares it with friends!

Q: How did you come up with the introductory sentences before each picture in the book?
I was just honest, but I’m naturally very sarcastic in my sense of humor. I said exactly what I was thinking when I looked at each picture. It’s pretty much what my life is like!

Q: Is this book available only on Amazon?
For now, yes. I’d love a publisher to offer me a contract and have it distributed to all over, but we’ll see!

Q: How many pages are in the book?
It’s around 80 I believe, or a bit more. I could have done more but I didn’t want to make it awkward to carry around. I just wanted moms to have something to help themselves de-stress and get a good laugh out of. I hope moms like it and tell their friends, too.

Q: Is it true you were recently interviewed for a newspaper article?
Yes! The local paper did a piece on my book. It’s very exciting!
