1. Try to determine where the negativity may be coming from (environmental factors?).
2. Understand that temperament and genetics may play a role in his or her attitude. 
3. Be a good listener. 
4. Put a time limit on complaints. 
5. Provide honest feedback. 
6. Try not to be judgmental.
7. Reinforce positivity. 
8. Try not to take things personally.
