Want Your Kids to be Open to New Things? Challenge Them! Parenting

My 5th grader came home from school and announced that he “hated art.” He gave me many reasons why, but I wanted to help him be open to things he doesn’t like. I thought of turning it into challenge he can win. I said, “I challenge you to find ONE thing about art you like.” He was quiet for a minute. Then a big grin spread across his face and he said. “You’re on. I love tracing those circles and then coloring them in, in any color we want.”

Success.

It’s amazing how we can turn things around for our children just by making them feel good about themselves. I have other challenges in mind, too!

This is fantastic, Gail Harris! What kid doesn't want to challenge his or her parent?! :)

Yea, Actually I do this with myself, as well. It's really about openness, and we all need that. Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead . Thanks.
