The First Day of School: How Parents Can Help Kids Get Ready for the New School Year Parenting School/Education

First days are tough for most people. When it’s a young child, there are going to be numerous firsts, including the first day of school. Some children face anxiety, most notably separation anxiety, on that first day of school.

In order to best help your little one adjust to this new reality, this new pattern and routine of life when school is in session, there are several things you can do in the lead up to that first day school. One of them is to set realistic expectations. You may very well be excited about this milestone in your child’s life, but he or she isn’t likely seeing things the same way.

No matter what your expectations might have been for this first day, slow down. Maybe your child isn’t going to make a ton of friends that first day, so don’t set it up as though that’s going to happen. Instead, focus on what is likely to be the routine, what they should expect and listen to what they say.

Kids will tell you a lot of their fears either through their words or actions. Address those fears. Acknowledge them.
