Karyn Calabrese, a 68-year-old grandmother and advocate for veganism and raw foods, was thrown a curveball when she learned about the death of actor Chadwick Boseman from colon cancer. Here's her touching tribute to the man who left us too soon:

2020 threw another curveball our way – the nation was devastated to hear that Chadwick Boseman had lost his battle with cancer. The 43 year-old actor had made an impact on various audiences, demonstrating his influence and leadership.

Like so many, I have found myself struggling with the news of Chadwick Boseman’s passing. The actor has left us too soon, as his short career illustrated how much influence he truly carried. His individual character is illuminated through the roles that he starred in. He was affable, collected and dignified, arguably a rarity in modern day Hollywood.

Boseman’s ability to embody crucial characters within the black community has solidified his legacy. From Jackie Robinson to James Brown to the Black Panther, Boseman portrayals have defined the various heroes that exist. Characters that are both real and fictional, part of a futuristic world and from the 19th century, rich and poor; Boseman reminds us that heroes are defined, above all else, by their morals.

While we grapple with the despair of his passing, I hope that in recognizing what was great within Chadwick Boseman, we are able to identify that same recognition within ourselves and our communities.
