CDC Face Mask Recommendations During Coronavirus Pandemic: If You're Questioning Them, Read This Opinion

Questioning the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendation to only wear masks to minimize spreading illness and not to prevent becoming sick?

When the kids and I were at the beach for the first time (in California many years ago), I made them each wear life jackets, until a lifeguard came and told me that is not allowed and they must remove them. I was dumbfounded, but followed orders.

As they went back to playing, I very politely said, "With all due respect, I'm very confused. Can you please explain this to me?" He responded, "I know it seems counterintuitive and I'm sure you are a very attentive parent, but it gives both the wearer and the watcher a false sense of security so they take more risks. And they are also much more likely to be swept away with the tide."

I can't help but think the masks are a similar situation. People are much more likely to leave home if they feel protected, when in reality it is much more about their hands and touching their faces, which untrained wearers tend to do even more when wearing a mask.

Not to mention the shortage of masks essential personnel are already experiencing.

Wow, great analogy, Candy Stephens . Many thanks for sharing your experience because it really helps us understand why masks should be reserved for those on the front lines, our health care workers!
