Love & Loss During the Holidays: How to Make Memories While Showing Compassion for Those Who are Hurting Holidays Relationships

Many people look forward to the holidays every year. For those of us who are missing loved ones that are no longer with us, it can be hard to hear about everyone else’s plans when you’re hurting. I lost both of my parents far too young and I definitely struggle. However, my advice isn’t for those struggling. My advice is for those who are lucky enough to still have their loved ones to celebrate with.

If you have friends or family who are struggling, here are some tips that have helped me:

  • Please don’t feel sorry for us. It only makes us feel worse, even when your heart is in the right place. We appreciate your concern, but it doesn’t make us feel good.
  • Don’t feel guilty for having what and who you have! We aren’t jealous. We are envious, yes, but there is a difference. Deep down we are happy for you because we love you!
  • Most importantly, do not take one second for granted. If you still are lucky enough to have your parents, grandparents or whoever else was important in your life growing up, do not take one second for granted. When they are gone, they are gone.

So, make memories and enjoy every second while also keeping those of us that might be hurting in your hearts. It’s all we really want.
