Facebook Fiction: How Social Media Creates a False Sense of Reality Tech Relationships

Social media can be a great thing. I personally love looking at my friend's family photos, especially babies. I love seeing what I was doing a year ago, or five. I see old pictures of my daughter, from her first day on skates to school parties. That aspect of social media is great. Of course, like most everyone my age, I constantly consider removing Facebook or Instagram from my life. Why?

  • I see people post on social media, making it seem like their life is so great, when it's hanging on by a thread.
  • It shows people that they can be the super mom if they were more like this friend or that friend.
  • It shows that you can have this amazing marriage, when in reality, you spend more time trying to show people how great your relationship is than it actually is.

It's hard to grasp what is "real" and what is "fake" when it comes to social media. All my daughter asks is when she can get an Instagram or Snapchat account. I want her to live blissfully unaware of the constant comparison that I have found myself to be thrust into.

You put into words what so many of us are feeling about social media, Jessica Lawrence . It definitely can be a love-hate relationship. We show our "friends" what we want them to see. I try to think of it as a public photo album. You post the pics you want to show, and the rest, not so much. Thinking about it that way, knowing that everyone is showing only what they want the world to see, helps keep it in perspective for me. We know it's not the full story. No one's life is perfect and everyone has challenges. One of the things I love about your posts is their authenticity. You keep it real, and that is a breath of fresh air. Thank you for all you share with us!
