Watching our kids experience failure, rejection or disappointment can be one of the hardest things we do as parents. So how can you help? Start by encouraging your teen to look at the situation from a different perspective.
- Reflect: What are you are learning about yourself in the process? What surprises you? What do you wish would change? Stay the same?
- Recognize: This is an isolated situation? A set-back? It is not a final sentence and does not define you as a whole.
- Refocus: What change of thinking and feelings do you need?
- Re-engage: Look for opportunity beyond the failure. How could you go about it differently next time?
Give it a try for yourself, too!!
