Got a Picky Eater? Why You Need to Rethink the One-Bite Rule!

While the “one bite rule” works for some, it can fuel picky eating in many kids. It may get one bite of a food in your child today, but it isn’t teaching him to like these foods. What your child is learning is to eat what pleases others – the opposite of mindful eating.

What to do? Prepare and serve foods you’ve indicated you want him to eat. Enough said. And focus your energy on enjoying each other at meals. It seems counter-intuitive, but the more pleasant mealtime is, the more likely kids are to try new foods.

Agree! Interviewed a dietitian on my blog and found it useful to remember that the mom's job is to serve up nutritious choices and not force feed the child nor give in to serving treats - that really takes the pressure off, just like you said! :)

Thanks for sharing this Kristen Yarker, MSc, RD and for your comments @marciemom. It was really helpful to hear. I have 2 really picky eaters and when I make them try one bite of certain foods they literally hold their noses, gulp it down and down water. Clearly this is not teaching them to like anything!
