Eggs to Dye For: Why Parents Need to Be Careful About Synthetic Food Coloring!

Certified food dyes approved by the FDA include colors synthesized from petroleum derivatives and even coal tar. Though some dyes are from "natural sources," read further. Did you know that carminic acid is a commonly used red food coloring that comes from the dried, crushed bodies of pregnant female scale insects called cochineal?  When you use plant-based dyes for coloring, kids love to mash the veggies, and you know exactly what you're ingesting. Try using:

  • beets for red
  • cumin or turmeric for orange and yellow
  • kale juice or spinach for greens
  • blueberries for purples
