Sensory Play: 4 Neuro-diverse Sensory Activities Any Kid Will Enjoy

When you hear "sensory" do you often think "special needs?" Think again! All children can benefit! Sensory play assists children in examining, categorizing and making sense of their world. Engaging in sensory exploration positively impacts language, play skills, fine and gross motor development and covers many science skills. And remember -- sensory play is NOT all about touch! Here are four diverse sensory activities that will interest any child:

  • Mix colored ice cubes with a bowl of dry rice. As the cubes melt, kids will see new colors form! It feels great, too!
  • Mix paint with different baking extracts for smelly painting!
  • Cover flashlights with colored film and use under a blanket.
  • Use waterproof speakers or instruments in the pool. Kids can listen to music underwater!
