5 Reasons You Need to Help Build Your Kid's Emotional Intelligence!

When your kids are going through a difficult moment, do you ever catch yourself saying, "Don't be ______ (insert feeling word)?" Studies have shown that naming feelings is the first step to develop your emotional intelligence (EQ). EQ is your ability to identify and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this AWARENESS plus your thoughts to be INTENTIONAL and PURPOSEFUL in your response. Students with greater than average EQ have:

  • stronger relationships with peers and adults.
  • greater health and less stress.
  • greater academic success.
  • greater happiness and life success.
  • better decision-making skills, engaging in less risky behaviors.

Kelli Schulte - Thank you for the reminder especially right now with high school finals and having a teenager that's stressed out. Not helpful to say, "Don't feel stressed!" Thanks Kelli.

Totally get that though. Isn't it so much easier to push them through the feeling instead of lingering in it!!???
I think we do it though because we care and want to protect our kids. But then they miss out in learning how to deal with strong emotions like stress, disappointment, fear, etc. But I know you get that!! :)
