Hand, foot and mouth disease usually starts with:

  • fever
  • poor appetite
  • vague sense of feeling unwell 
  • sore throat

A few days after the fever begins:

  • painful sores can develop, usually in the back of the mouth
  • a body rash also may develop, usually on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, but it can be found on other areas of the body as well

A child with the virus might not have all the symptoms, so talk to your doctor if your child has any of the above symptoms.
