Summer Sun Refresher: 10 Tips for Optimal Sun Protection Family Health Skin Care
Summer is almost here, which means it’s time to dust off the sunscreen and get back into a lather routine to protect your family from the sun. Ample use of sunscreen for the first 18 years of life would reduce nonmelanoma skin cancer by 78 percent, but most parents agree this task is much harder than it seems. If it’s been a while since you’ve tackled this wildly unpopular task, here’s a refresher on the basics:
- Lather up everyone over 6 months with SPF 15 (or greater) sunscreen.
- Use broad spectrum, and look for the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation.
- Apply at least 30 minutes before you head outside.
- Use a shot glass full of sunscreen to cover an entire body.
- Wear sunscreen even when it’s cloudy.
- Reapply every two hours, even if you don’t get wet.
- Use water resistant if you’re swimming or sweating.
- Always reapply after you towel off.
- Beware of medications that may make you more sun-sensitive.
- Cover up and wear a hat for added protection.
There’s no such thing as a healthy glow! Remember, tanned skin is damaged skin, so protect your family from harmful rays before you head outside.
