When Can a Sick Child Return to School? Here Are Tips From a School Nurse! Kids' Health
From the flu to strep throat to dreaded head lice, when hundreds of kids attend school – many in buildings with windows shut at all times – it is inevitable that germs will spread and your child will get sick at least once during the school year. My No. 1 priority as a school nurse is the health and safety of the students. I always try to reiterate to parents and guardians the importance of keeping children home when they are sick to prevent the spread of illness not only to other students, but to staff as well!
Here is a quick cheat sheet to use when questioning whether or not your child is ready to return to school. It would be beneficial to students and staff to keep your child home if they have:
- Vomited or had diarrhea in the last 24 hours.
- An undiagnosed skin rash.
- A temperature of 100.0 degrees F or higher.
- Red/itchy eyes or discharge from eyes.
- Itchy scalp due to live lice in hair.
Remind children to wash their hands often, and cover their cough and sneeze into their elbow. Sending in doctor notes listing any restrictions or special care instructions is very helpful, especially if your child has had a recent injury.
