Autism Awareness: 5 Things Parents With an Autistic Child Wish You Knew Special Needs
One of my sons, Everson, is on the spectrum and nonverbal. While it is hard to parent a nonverbal autistic child, it is even more difficult to manage the judgments and misunderstandings that come from a lack of awareness or acceptance.
Here are five tips that autism moms and dads wish all people understood:
- Every single person on the planet has "autistic-like characteristics." Read the book Uniquely Human by Barry M. Prizant.
- All children, autistic or not, have innocent and positive intentions.
- All people, including autistic children, like being spoken to and interacted with in their own ways.
- Parents of ASD kids like being asked questions.
- Please don't say, "I'm sorry," when I tell you my child has autism.
Autism is just a different way of being human.
