It’s Never Too Late to Benefit From Exercise – Even for Older Adults! Fitness

What is the best type of exercise for older adults? This was the question that researchers at the Mayo Clinic set out to answer in a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism. They found that compared to vigorous weight training and moderate stationary bike riding, interval training produced the greatest benefits for older adults.

In addition to the usual health benefits from exercise, the interval training group had significant gains in cellular health including increases in the number and health of their mitochondria. Typically, mitochondria diminish in number and vigor as we age and are responsible for producing energy.
