Do you soak up the sun to help your body make vitamin D? A study has found that too much sun exposure may actually lower vitamin D levels.
Researchers compared study participants' sun index scores and skin types with their blood levels of vitamin D. They found that most people with a very high daily exposure level to the sun had lower than normal vitamin D levels. According to researchers, tan skin provides some protection against harmful UV rays, but the pigment may block vitamin D synthesis and hamper skin’s ability to produce vitamin D.
