Finding Everyone's Space in a Family When a Child Has Special Needs

Families are tremendous interpersonal connections that often serve as the social foundation for all future relationships. The roles of mothers and fathers have common understandings, but siblings don't have the same definition. When one of the children has special needs, the other children’s roles as sisters and brothers can be significantly impacted. As parents, it is important to find ways to allow the spotlight of self-identity to shine on each of the children. Listen, watch, learn and reinforce the quiet triumphs subtly demonstrated by:

  • Seeing each child’s strengths.
  • Hearing the kindness demonstrated when no one is watching.
  • Noticing when kids help each other.
  • Identifying when someone needs a hand.

Encourage (without expecting) empathy among children and find the moments to celebrate.
