In April of 2001, the U.S. observed Sexual Assault Awareness Month for the first time. According to RAINN.org, "every 98 seconds somebody experiences a sexual assault. And every eight minutes, that victim is a child. Meanwhile, only six out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison." Here's how to protect yourself when you meet someone for the first time:
- Pick a public place and tell a friend.
- Don't reveal personal information too soon.
- When engaging in sexual activity, communication is key.
- Use the phrase, "Is this OK?" Say "No" if it's not.
- You can change your mind if you don't feel comfortable.
- Trust your gut and be aware of your surroundings.
