How to Talk to Your Kids About Difficult Topics Going on in Our World by Dr. Christina Hibbert

How can we talk to our children about difficult things going on in our world? Here's some help:

  • First and foremost, we need to be honest. We need to tell them truthfully, in words they can understand, what is happening, according to their age and ability to comprehend. This doesn't mean we share every bit of scary news, but rather, we share what we feel they need to know.
  • Second, we need to listen to them. We need to remember our children are smart, and they have their own opinions and ideas that are sometimes wiser than their years.
  • And third, we need to remind them that the world is a safe place, and that home is a safe place. That "no matter what is happening out in the world, we love you and our family is here for you," and that "everything IS and is going to BE OK."
